An Evening at San Francisco's Blue restaurant

There is an old French saying that if you sit at a café on the Champs-Elysées long enough, everyone in the world will pass by.  The same could be said for sitting at Blue, the snazzy but remarkably unpretentious bistro in the heart of the Castro district.  Situated right in the middle of Market Street, between 16th and Castro, Blue is an ideal venue for people watching and, should the mood strike you, cruising.

"We prefer to keep the atmosphere simple and donate our energy to the food."  Says Blue co-owner Andre Normand.  This is not to say that Blue has skimped on the décor. Huge mirrors hang on unfinished grey cement walls, giving the restaurant a refreshingly open ambiance.  The dimly set spot lighting fixtures along the ceiling help to create a mood that is both bohemian and romantic.

East meets mid-west at Blue, where you can enjoy crispy french fries and sample an assortment of refreshing Sakitails.  Somewhat of a Caesar salad aficionado, I have sampled almost every one in the city.  Blue's is one of the best, with their homemade dressing bursting with herbs and anchovies.

Chef Jose Torres showcases nightly entrée, wine, starter, fresh catch, and sweet specials in addition to the restaurant's regular menu that offers everything from Gourmet Macaroni and Cheese with Japanese breadcrumbs to Grilled Salmon with green beans and garlic mashed potatoes.  Should you be in the mood for a quick chicken burger or turkey pastrami sandwich, Blue has that as well.

Blue's wine list is solid, offering an assortment of treasures from our own California vineyards.  There are plenty of drinks for those not interested in alcohol, most notably four different kind of root beer!

The service is extraordinary.  Our server Jason was attentive and charming and Otto, Blue's General Manager, has a smile that practically melted the ice cream on the homemade pecan pie I ordered.  Located in the space that was once Pozole, it was refreshing to see a staff that didn't look like they just walked off the set of the latest porn flick.  These are real people, serving real food, in a real environment, and it all comes together beautifully.

So, stop by Blue and peek in. You'll be sure to stay for a bite or a full meal, and don't forget those french fries, that may very well out-crisp those of your favorite diner.
