Words From David

July 2006

When I was a little boy, I wanted to be a priest.  I learned that from re-reading an old journal (I think I called it a diary when I was a little boy).  Looking back, I think it was something about the robes, jewels, and the big gold cups. Basically, I wanted to be a drag queen, but priests were the closest things we had to drag queens in suburban New Jersey. Well, there you have it.

So, life comes full circle. I am not a priest, but I've been a drag queen. Today. I am a writer and a therapist, but I do live in a city that has an amazing order of drag queen nuns. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (http://www.thesisters.org/) have been doing community work and fund raising for struggling non-profits since I was in diapers.

Now that we've got that out of the way, I send you greetings from San Francisco on a very warm July evening.

This past overhaul of davidortmann.com took over a year and I am glad to share it with you. It's been a awhile since my last update. People keep asking me if I am going to do a blog (I dislike blogs) or a podcast (I like podcasts, but will probably only do one on my professional therapy website www.dopsychotherapy.com).  So this is not a blog. This is serious writing goddamn it!

The past year saw me leave the working-for-someone-else job market to begin my private psychotherapy and sex therapy practice, which has been successful and I am very grateful. When not doing therapy and giving presentations about the work I do, I am writing, but I do feel rusty having given so much time to the development of my practice in the last sixteen months.  I am beginning to scrawl again. or crawl again. It's like learning how to walk, or going back to the Gym after a long time away.you almost have to re-learn, take baby steps, rub sore muscles and (obviously) beat mixed metaphors to death! Someone should stop me.

Anyway, the last year as seen some great new writing projects, a continuation of my second novel, re-writes on my first, and I put on a ton of clothing for one photographer while taking off quite a bit for another.  It's nice to get before the cameras again once in awhile.

Have a great summer and keep checking in.

Signing out for now,

David
